CALIBRATE YOUR SPREADERS TO WIN 2013

We design each and every BBI spreader to meet the needs of precision agriculture producers in the field, and we deliver our promise of better farming economics through our global dealer network, territory representatives, and the customer support team at our Georgia headquarters.

The key to improving a farm’s economics lies in the crop yield.  Higher yields demand greater precision for improving margins, and from year to year and season to season, there’s simply no precision—and no yield improvement—without proper calibration.

Two tests outlined in the video below can ensure that an operator is using a calibrated spreader for the upcoming season.  The Catch Test and the Pan Test calibrate the conveyor and the spinners, respectively, providing critical checks of the amount of material discharged, as well as the precision of the spread pattern.

Catch Test To perform a Catch Test, load a known amount of material on the conveyor.  Run the material completely out using the calibration menu in the controller. Then compare the known weight discharged to your controller’s stated output weight. Finally, consult the controller’s operator's manual for specific calibration instructions. Catch tests should be of at least 1,000 lbs or more. Catch tests should be run until the operator is satisfied.

Pan Test   To perform a Pan Test, arrange pans opposite the direction of travel at intervals of about five feet apart.  Next, drive over the pans on the ends, traveling in the same direction each time. Pour the resulting catch into test tubes of the same size—note the pattern and change the spinner controls according to the operator's manual. Repeat until satisfied with the outcome. Graph paper and flags are very useful in the process.

All of us at BBI wish our customers a successful 2013 growing season. Please contact your dealer or our Sales, Parts, and Service team—we’re all here to help you make the most of your investment.
